Jan Fox, a Midwest dermatologist's daughter who believes she win Corigliano's love and Dede's respect if she manages to convince Beaton Lowell to divest itself from South Africa. Adam Saperstein, a logorrheic savant whose political ruminations cast impotent stones at the politically correct orthodoxy of the day, desperately craves Corigliano's esteem while he vents his bilious rage at his holier-than-thou teacher.
